Photographs of 2023

As I have done for previous years I’ve collected together some samples of my work from the passing year. I was pleasantly surprised to go through the year, this years leaves behind plenty of good memories. Though I’ve been taking fewer assignments in recent years I’m proud of the work I’ve accomplished. There were memorable concerts, interesting work for the Akureyri Art Museum and The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum, various events, secret weddings and beautiful people of all ages! One project stands out, being a presidential photographer for two days in the official visit of the President of …

Photographs of 2022

One more year behind, on more year ahead. As always, some memorable adventures happened in 2022, summer trip to South Iceland and a springtime visit to Melrakkaslétta. I had some interesting portrait sessions, photographed some brilliant concerts, did projects with local artists and continued work with some clients I’ve worked with for many years now. One particular highlight was the release of a book of paintings by Guðrún Pálína Guðmundsdóttir and album cover for Stefán Elí. Thanks for all the memories from the past year and happy 2023!

Photographs of 2021

So, another year has flown by! My year in photography is filled with people, birds, glaciers, a volcano, politicians, musicians (even if live gigs were at minimum), friends, mountains and adventures! I got to see some great live gigs, visited an ice cave with my girlfriend (how about the Christmas-present of the year award?), saw the volcano in Geldingadalir burst out (just before it went silent, action might be expected in 2022 though). Highlights were to visit Hrísey island twice, very pleasant stay in the south eastern corner of Iceland and of course visiting the ice cave with my girlfriend …

Summer Highlights

Winter approaches, slowly but steadily. This summer has been dry and sunny in North Iceland, breaking some weather records in both July and August. Sadly not a surpising pattern due to global warming. One of my early summer assigments was to create some promotial material for local punk legends Helgi og hljóðfæraleikararnir, sometimes introuduced as the best kept secret on the icelandic music scene. I visited Langanes with my good friends Eyþór Ingi and Sindri Swan in the end of May. Langanes is a bird photographers paradise with diverse species of shorebirds nesting there during the summer. Traveling through a …

Hrísey on a Winter’s Day

Last Wednesday our little team of landscape hunters with Eyþór Ingi Jónsson and Sindri Swan decided to visit the island Hrísey. This little island is known as a peaceful place with outstanding mountain views, earning it the nickname pearl of Eyjafjörður. Not going with a specific plan we did expect to have some shots of the little town and maybe some birdlife, especially with the ptarmigan in mind. The ptarmigan is protected in the island and there are no cats, no foxes and no minks to hunt them. Weather forecast told us we were to expect mild frost, low winds …

Landscape hunting in North Iceland

During the pandemic me and my good friends Eyþór Ingi and Sindri Swan have been using our time to photograph our surroundings in North Iceland. Our trips have mostly been on wednesdays, gaining us the nickname the wednesday photographers. These trips have been fruitful, we’ve made some interesting images and had many cups of coffee Photographing Iceland in the wintertime doesn’t give you a lot of time in the daylight, so much of our effort has been done during the night. Now as the sun is rising higher above the horizon we might use the longer days to travel further …

Exhibition – Colors of Akureyri

Litir Akureyrar (Colors of Akureyri) was the title used for my exhibition in Glerártorg shopping centre in Akureyri. The exhibition was the first one in a series showing the works of local photographers in the shopping center. These images show Akureyri in every season and some of our landmarks and buildings. The images have all appeared as a part of a larger project on Facebook under the page Augnablik á Akureyri. Printed with the services of www.ljosmyndaprentun.is. Every image is available as prints in selected sizes, please contact daniel@danielstarrason.com for inquiries.

Photographs of 2020

So it’s finally over, the disastrous year of 2020. For me as a photographer this year has been very good creatively although I’ll have to admit it was hard commercially and financially. Lack of projects made some room for my own projects, mostly landscapes and nature photography I haven’t had to much time for in recent years. I’ve read more books and I did pick up my guitar more often than in recent years, making the most of this year creatively as I could. Highlights of this year include my first trip to Grímsey island, many road trips around Northern …

Sólstöður album cover

Earlier this year I was asked by guitarist Mikael Máni if I had some interest in making an album cover for his new project Sólstöður. With him on the record are Pierre Balda on upright bass and pianist Floris Kappeyne and the music is at least partly inspired by the midnight sun, the name meaning Solstice. So I spent some nights this summer hunting the sunset without much success. As the design process got started with graphic designer Einar Andersen we decided on a different approach choosing a photograph showing a strange symbol made by strong forces of a glacial …

Ten Years of Hof – Cultural and Conference Center

A little more than ten years ago our culture center Hof was formally opened. I was there for the opening concert and since then I’ve been there for many more. For a while I had a contract with Hof to document various events happening there and then later on I’ve worked closely with SinfoniaNord and Atli Örvarsson, recently many film and television soundtracks have been recorded at Hof. Some of the highlights are a visit from Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson and his band, Eivør with Sinfóníuhljómsveit Norðurlands, Nýdönsk, Emilíana Torrini, Ásgeir Trausti, Dimma, Agent Fresco, Karlakór Akureyrar Geysir, Pálmi …
